Wabisabi + Whimsy
My name is Yurika Chiba. I grew up in Toronto, Canada but now live in San Jose where I play taiko with San Jose Taiko. Growing up, I was always perplexed with the question of whether I wanted to do music or art with my life. Well, it turns out that I didn't need to choose. I just do both.
WabiSabi and whimsy both inform my art. WabiSabi means I am drawn to impermanence which gives me gratitude for nature and found materials. It also means that chance plays deeply into my imagination, which is filled with colour and playfulness. Japanese materials and aesthetics of simplicity are other influences in my work.
